Stump Grinding · Rowlett & East DFW
No Stump. No Sprouts. No Reminder.
We grind below grade, chase the surface roots that fight your mower, and leave the spot level enough to sod. Backfill with the grindings or haul them off — you pick when we quote it.
Why It Matters
A Stump Isn't Done Until It's Gone.
Cutting a tree flush looks finished. In North Texas clay, what's left underground keeps working against you.
Termites Move In
A rotting stump ten feet from a slab is a food source and a nursery. Subterranean termites are everywhere in Dallas County — don't hand them a starter home.
Suckers Keep Coming
Hackberry, Bradford pear, ash and cottonwood will throw sprouts out of a live stump for years. Mowing them off just makes the root system try harder.
It Eats Your Yard
You can't sod it, plant it, fence over it or park on it. A 30-inch stump plus its flare is easily 15 square feet of yard you already paid for.
Mowers Lose
A hidden root or a stump edge under St. Augustine will take out a deck or a blade. It's the cheapest repair bill on this page to avoid.
How Deep
You Choose The Depth. We Write It Down.
Most companies grind to whatever the machine feels like and call it done. We agree on a number first, and that number goes on the estimate.
4" – 6"
Standard Grind
Enough to get the stump under the soil line so you can mow straight over it and never think about it again. This is what most yards need.
Best for: Mowing over it, laying sod, general cleanup
8" – 12"
Deep Grind
We chase the grinder down past the root flare so there is real soil depth on top. Costs a little more machine time, saves you a headache later.
Best for: Replanting nearby, new beds, irrigation work
Full Root Chase
Surface Roots Too
Blackjack oaks, silver maples and cottonwoods run big roots across the yard. We follow the offenders out and grind them flush so the lawn goes back level.
Best for: Tripping roots, cracked walks, uneven lawns
Grind Day
What Happens When We Show Up.
- 01
Locate Before We Cut
811 gets called on anything near a meter, and we probe for irrigation lines, invisible fence, low-voltage lighting and sprinkler heads ourselves. Marked flags stay in until we're done.
- 02
Clear & Protect
Rock, fence panels and beds get a shield. We lay plywood on soft turf so the machine's tracks don't rut your yard on the way in — most gates we can get through at 36 inches.
- 03
Grind Below Grade
Carbide teeth sweep the stump down in passes to the depth we agreed on, then we chase the flare and any surface roots you pointed out.
- 04
Backfill Or Haul
Your call: we backfill the hole with the grindings and crown it for settling, or we haul the chips off and bring in clean topsoil so you can sod right away.

Included On Every Grind
- Depth confirmed with you before the machine starts
- 811 utility locate on any stump near a line
- Sprinkler heads, lighting and fence flagged
- Surface roots ground flush where they cause trouble
- Grindings backfilled and crowned, or hauled off
- Turf raked, walks and drive blown clean
After The Grind
Keep The Chips Or Lose Them.
Every stump leaves a pile roughly twice the size of the stump. Here's the honest trade-off between the two options.
Backfill On Site
Included in the price. We push the grindings back in and crown the mound a few inches because it settles over the first season. Great if you just want the hole gone or you'll be seeding later. Don't plant a tree straight into it.
Haul Off & Topsoil
An add-on, and worth it when sod or a new tree is going in this season. Grindings leave, clean topsoil comes in, and you can plant the same weekend instead of waiting a year for chips to break down.

Straight Pricing
Six Things That Move The Number.
We won't quote a stump we haven't seen a photo of. Here's exactly what we're looking at when we price one.
Diameter At The Ground
Measured across the widest point of the stump, not the trunk you remember. A 12-inch crepe myrtle and a 48-inch live oak aren't in the same conversation.
Access To The Stump
A front-yard stump we can drive to is the cheapest grind there is. Backyard behind a 36-inch gate, up a slope, or through a pool deck takes a smaller machine and more time.
Depth You Need
Mow-over depth is standard. Replanting depth or a full root chase means more passes and more grindings to deal with.
What Happens To The Chips
Backfilling is included. Hauling grindings off and replacing them with topsoil is an add-on because it's a truckload of material both directions.
Rock, Fence Or Concrete
Grinding tight to a foundation, retaining wall or driveway edge is slow, careful work. Buried rock and old landscape stone eat teeth, and we'll flag that before we quote it.
How Many You've Got
Multiple stumps on one trip is always cheaper per stump. If the neighbor has one too, get us out the same day and both of you save the trip charge.
Text a photo of the stump with something for scale — a boot, a bucket, a soda can — to (469) 925-4380 and we can usually give you a number the same day. Estimates are always written and always free.
You Found The Right Crew
Grinding Is The Last Step. We Treat It Like It Counts.
Fully Insured
Liability and workers' comp on every job. Ask for the certificate and you'll have it before we start.
Owner On Site
The guy who quotes your stump is the guy running the grinder. No dispatcher, no subcontractor.
Utilities Located
811 called and irrigation probed. A cut sprinkler line is the single most common stump-grinding mistake.
Left Clean
Raked, blown and photographed. If the yard doesn't look right, we're not loading up.
FAQ
Stump Grinding Questions, Answered.
Straight answers, no runaround.
How deep do you grind a stump?
Standard is 4 to 6 inches below grade, which is enough to sod or mow over and forget it. If you're replanting a tree nearby or building a bed, we go 8 to 12 inches so there's real soil depth. We confirm the depth with you before the machine starts, and the depth is written on the estimate.
Do you remove the roots too?
We grind the stump and the root flare, plus any surface roots that are causing a problem — lifting a walk, tripping people, or fighting the mower. The full underground root system is left in place to decay naturally. Excavating an entire root plate means digging up the whole yard and is rarely worth it.
What happens to the wood chips?
Your choice, and there's no wrong answer. Most people have us backfill the hole with the grindings and crown it a few inches because it settles. If you're putting sod or a new tree there, we haul the grindings off and bring in clean topsoil instead. Gardeners often ask us to pile them up for mulch on the beds.
Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?
Not directly in the grindings. Wood chips tie up nitrogen while they break down, so a sapling planted straight into them struggles. Either plant a few feet off to the side, or have us dig the grindings out and backfill with topsoil so you can plant right away.
Will the grinder tear up my lawn?
There will be tire or track marks and some scuffing right at the stump — that's unavoidable with a machine that weighs what this one does. We lay plywood over soft turf, keep the same path in and out, and rake everything back down before we leave. On a wet week we'll reschedule rather than rut your yard.
Can you get a grinder into my backyard?
Usually. Our machine fits through a standard 36-inch gate. Send us a photo of the gate and the path and we'll tell you straight before we roll a truck. If the only access is through the house or over a pool deck, we'll talk through the options.
Do you grind stumps you didn't cut down?
All the time. Plenty of our grinding calls are stumps another company left behind, or one that's been sitting in the yard since a storm two summers ago. Old and weathered is fine — sometimes easier.
How long does stump grinding take?
Most single residential stumps take under an hour of grinding, plus setup and cleanup. A 40-plus inch oak or a hard-access backyard stump can run half a day. We give you a realistic window when we quote it instead of a hopeful one.
